Former Fairfield University basketball player Rich Flemming shot and killed in Philadelphia

Former Fairfield University basketball player Rich Flemming was shot and killed Sunday in Philadelphia, police said.

A Philadelphia police spokeswoman said Flemming, 24, was shot in the chest, back and thigh just before 6 p.m. Sunday. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Temple University Medical Center.

Police arrested 22-year-old Vinh Ly and charged him with murder and related offenses in connection with Flemming's death. A police spokeswoman said investigators haven't determined a motive.

Flemming, a 6-foot-7 forward, was part of coach Ed Cooley's first recruiting class. He played in 25 games and made 11 starts in 2006-07 before transferring to the University of Maryland at Baltimore County.

After sitting out a year, Flemming played in 23 games for UMBC in 2008-09, averaging 6.7 points and 4.5 rebounds.

Several players who knew or played with Flemming, including former Fairfield players Herbie Allen and Yorel Hawkins, took to Twitter Monday to mourn Flemming's loss:
